What Nobody Told Me about Being a Stay-at-Home Mom

Being a stay-at-home mom is hard! Kids constantly buzzing about needing you to keep them alive out of trouble while also trying to get other things done. But there is something nobody tells you about being a stay-at-home mom…or at least no one told me….

Once your kids reach a certain age, they will be in school 7 or 8 hours a day. My kids have reached this age, and I honestly thought it’d be so magical to not constantly be needed and to actually get my home clean and keep it that way. But it’s not as magical as I’d hoped.

Now I get my laundry done, bathrooms clean, and kitchen spotless, all before 10am. Now what? Exactly. I need a hobby. I’m much to used to not having a job to get one, plus I still enjoy being able to bring my kids to school and pick them up after, so the hours would need to be flexible.

If you’ve been ‘stuck’ in the boredom rut, you’re in good company. But I am on a freakin’ mission to change that. Life has to be about more than sitting around watching tv or reading books.

So let’s brainstorm. Here are some of my ideas:

  • Blogging. A lonely hobby most of the time though. And thinking of what to blog about can really get to ya sometimes. But it’s something to do.
  • Network marketing is more social for sure. Social media is really important for success with it. The key here is to choose a reputable company, not a pyramid scheme. There are both out there. Focus on meeting the needs of others and you can be quite prosperous, and entertained.
  • Write a book. Even if you doubt it’ll ever sell at Barnes and Noble, you can still self publish on Amazon like I did. Feel free to check it out! Again though, like blogging this isn’t a very social hobby, but something to do.
  • Baking. Years ago I used to bake cakes for my friends’ events. It’s a pretty fun way to spend your time.

There you have it. My best ideas. What would you do(or how do you) to spend your free time?

  1. I can relate and last night even created my first blog ever. I guess my mind is full and I feel I need to let some of it out. I recently became a stay at home mom after working since my youngest started kindergarten, he is now a 5th grader. I don’t even know how this makes me a stay at home mom anymore they aren’t here. Two are teenagers I feel I see in passing some days. So what do we do because the cleaning is done and my eyes hurt from reading. I’ve read so much the last two months I feel writing a book would be plagerisum. But I have been book crafting again. Try some crafts out it takes up time a creates a mess to clean😃

  2. Lately I have been taking books I have read and like and made picture frames, wreaths, bottles, and wall art with them. I have my oldest graduating in six months and need to scrapbook, but can’t seem to get into it. Maybe because I have 17 years to piece together. Thank you for the congrats. I have some reading to do on your page. Should keep me busy today 👍

  3. I can also relate. I’m going to follow your blog to find out where your path takes you. I’ve just started blogging this week about my own path into SAHMing and now through the stage you are just entering. When faced with your question, I decided to go back to school –I started with a research grant to do my PhD research but as a result my family was in Japan for the big earthquake and nuclear incident! So then I found myself right back where you are asking myself the same question. Next I started a book… that morphed into a business and it is the most marvelous adventure of my life! I hope you’ll check my blog out and follow me too! It will be fun to take this journey together. I’ll be interested to see which direction you.
