Day 4: My Whole 30 Journal

“The food you eat either makes you more healthy or less healthy.”

-Excerpt From: Melissa Hartwig & Dallas Hartwig. “It Starts With Food.”

I just finally started reading the book connected to the Whole 30 challenge, It Starts with Food. I’m already learning a lot, but one of the bigger takeaways today is that wine isn’t allowed. The reason being is because my gut is trying to heal so I’m supposed to follow the plan completely. So I’m in. No more wine for September. {enter frowy-face here}

Whole 30 book
Let’s recap dinner from last night. Steak, yum! And my cooking contribution was Bacon & Green Beans as a side dish.

It’s only for 30 days, but as I’m usually a junk-food junkie, I’m really having to work hard to make this challenge not only beneficial but delicious. This recipe was simple, delicious, and inspired by a side dish I’d had at a local restaurant The Montana Club

Restaurant ingredients are a mystery, but I recreated the concept with two ingredients plus salt and pepper. It’s now a family favorite!

This is the perfect dish for you if you:

  • Love Bacon
  • Are Paleo dieting
  • Are doing the Whole 30
  • Are Keto
  • Are doing the 21 Day Fix
  • Are “cleaning-eating”
  • Are a human with taste buds

Wanna try it for yourself? Here’s the recipe.

Today was a good day. My cravings are going away and I feel like I have a lot more natural energy.

The day started off with 2 cups of black coffee and a cherry Larabar. (I’m starting to not miss bread!) I needed the warmth from the coffee.

This Labor Day weekend has turned cold and my dad and I promised each other we’d waterski this morning, “No matter what.” Well, 45 degrees out and lake water not feeling much warmer wasn’t ideal, but the lake was as smooth as glass and definitely worth braving the cold. Plus I love watching my dad waterski. He’s a 63 year old badass.

After skiing I had more coffee followed by a breakfast of eggs, shredded potatoes, sausage links, and a red Solo cup of Simply Orange juice.

Surprisingly to me breakfast kept me full til dinner! {Success} My mom and I went on a 4-mile jog/walk today (stopped for drip coffee halfway). I had plenty of energy.

Tonight’s dinner was pork, sautéed potatoes and zucchini, with fresh cantaloupe for dessert.

A normal sight around the campfire is of me drinking a beer. Tonight I substituted with lime La Croix. Not as much fun, but bubbly and in a can.

I feel like I’m getting the hang of this style of eating and it’s only day 4. That’s something to celebrate!
