Reupholstering with burlap coffee bags

Let me introduce myself. My name is Anne and I’m crazy for coffee. After spending way too much time on Pinterest, I finally decided what material I would use to reupholster my Grandmother’s old chairs with.

Burlap coffee bags!

My dear grandmother Ruth passed away a year and a half ago, and I claimed two chairs. I remember not really liking sitting in these chairs during my younger years because they aren’t as comfortable as a comfy recliner or cushy couch, but as I grew to realize that my decorating style is quite similar to hers.

The material has worn down from years of use and, in her later years, a cat. But the structure of both chairs is still great.

I ordered the burlap coffee bags from a seller on Etsy. Today was the day. I pulled the first chair up the stairs and began cutting the sacks.

I studied a few YouTube videos and read a few articles about reupholstering, but it all seemed a little too professional for me and my burlap, so I improvised. I didn’t take any of the old fabric off.

To be sure the fabric wasn’t saggy, I first used an adhesive spray to bond the fabrics together. Worked remarkably well! I worked in chair sections, stopping at each seam. I cut the fabric to cover the surface of each section before attaching it.

Then the long and tedious work…I mean, uh, fun….began. I stitched the fabric (edges folded under) to the seam area of the chair. *sidenote: I had to be sure to sew the needle through the tight chair fabric first because the holes in the burlap were too large*

I’m quite pleased with how my chair turned out! Now I’ve got the perfect place to drink my morning cuppa joe.
